In the manner of a strumpet...

Earlier today I read through an appellant's "motion to recuse appellee's counsel." Essentially, a motion to say there's a reason the other side shouldn't be using the lawyer they're using. In this case, he was seemingly contending there was a conflict of interest because he'd used the same firm for some other suit like, 5 years ago.

Anyway, at the end of the guy's motion (he was filing pro se, or sans lawyer for you non-law folks, but I think the guy himself is an attorney...either that or he did a really good job teaching himself civil procedure and legal writing...anywho...) he wrote that he wanted to refer the law firm to the Office of the Bar Counsel for behaving "in the manner of a strumpet." I literally, seriously, honestly laughed out loud. By the way, for those of you out there that may be less of a vocab nut than I am, "strumpet" is a fourteenth century term for a prostitute. I don't think I ever expected to see that term in any modern legal documents whatsoever, least of all in reference to the opposing side's counsel.

Well, other than that amusement, work has been kind of slow. Apparently I work too fast so I keep having large breaks when my supervisor didn't expect I'd be done so soon and so he has to find something for me to do. While he's finding something, I get paid to fiddle around online.

I am annoyed with the new intern. He's eager to the point of irritation, and he keeps going and pestering the commissioners the instant he has nothing to do rather than waiting for our supervisor to come give us all something. The commissioners are busy men. They're basically the judges at this particular institution. Don't overly pester busy people! Which includes me, by the way. He seems to like to talk a lot, and yes, I do too, but when I'm focused I don't take kindly to a lot of interruptions. Ashley (the other intern that started at the same time I did) has picked up on that. He has not.

Okay, done with the venting. At least I have Ashley to diffuse my irritation a bit. But I do have to deal with this guy for another 9 weeks, and while I've learned to control my temper, when someone rubs me the wrong way this early on that control is going to wear reaaaalllly thin, especially when I have nowhere to escape to. I don't even have a separate desk to escape to, we're all at a table in the middle of the mini-library at the tax board. Ah, the joys of being an intern.

At least I went out after work so I did enjoy the rest of my Friday. And now I'm going to sleep.

You know I'm also a vocab freak so your title immediately intrigued me and as soon as I got to the part of your post where you refer to the context where this guy used it I too laughed out loud. Too good!!!

Just a little over 2 months & you're free of who we will now refer to as annoying talker guy.

I SERIOUSLY hope you go to the beach this weekend, if only we didn't have family stuff I'd be there with you in a NY minute. Freaking gorgeous out!!!

...isn't interning the best?! haha! I read a case on thursday about the p & z decision surrounding a subdivision called "Buckwheat Acres". I was giggling for about a half hour. That didn't come close to the 'doggy fashion" case we got in evidence last spring though. I still laugh about that. Silly judges and their quotation marks. XD

"In the manner of a strumpet..." someone must have Word of the Day on their homepage. But kudos for using a real word instead of something like 'celebutante' or a text messaging inspired misspelling.
About your OCD - it's only a disorder if it doesn't work for you ;). In some professions, say maybe law or pastry - it's an asset! OC Pride!

Jenn: Figured it was you but only because I remember you talking about hanging up the phone as soon as they ask if it's "Jennifer Shno."

Bree: Yes, interning is the best! I haven't taken evidence yet, I'll be on the lookout for the "doggy fashion" case.

Vesta: I don't know about the guy who used the word in his motion...but I do, in fact, have a word of the day calendar. Although I'd be disappointed if the word strumpet was on one of the days because I already know it. I'm always disappointed when my calendar gives me a word I already know. It's supposed to be something new!

A dessert, huh? Strawberry Strumpet - a hot buttery crumpet piled high with tiny wild french strawberries tossed with freshly grated orange zest, velvety vanilla creme anglaise drizzled over the top with a swirl of stawberry coulis as garnish.....

OMG, that sounds delicious. I love strawberries.

I envy your determination in law school. I can only imagine all the hard work that you are going through. I am just popping in and seeing your blog for the first time.

Had lots of friends that went through law and listened to their frustrations and then their joy when they were done. Good luck with it all! KC

The KC comment threw me! I haven't been able to read your blog, let alone write for weeks...so I knew it wasn't me.

I think I shall adopt "In the manner of a strumpet" as my new motto. It's much better than 'Dorito eato some...'

Love you!!
